So, you’re on an important zoom call. Maybe a sales call.
A deal is on the table — you want to ensure your message is being received.
Now, you know what to say. That’s the hard part.
But what is your body language communicating to the prospect?
You probably think.. this is silly, I’m sure I’m fine.
But are you sure? Do you actually know what your body is saying? The last thing you want is a minor distraction to tank your deal.
In any meeting (particularly as a salesperson) you want to be
1. Trustworthy
2. Attentive
3. Clear
You want to avoid displaying
1. Shiftiniss (untrustworthy)
2. Nervousness
3. Distractions
So let’s examine how you can make a good impression and raise your status over Zoom.
Without saying a word.
It starts with your posture.
Like in person, over Zoom your body is communicating countless signals on the video screen. A straight back signals confidence, so sit up straight. Or if you like, stand.
Consider how it looks when you slouch. Prospects might wonder…
Are you tired? Am I getting your full attention?
Small subconscious thoughts like these could tug away their attention during your call. Do you see how this could make it harder for you to get the prospect to see the value you’re offering?
Open hands, shoulder width apart, signal *you guessed it* openness.
This makes you trustworthy because you look like you have nothing to hide.
Consider how it looks when your arms are folded across your chest.
Are you lost in thought? Are you judging me? Do you not like me?
You don’t need any reason for the prospect to question your intentions.
Make sure your face is in the top third of your Zoom window, and your hands are visible. **Great trick (shoutout to my oratory coaches): Put your laptop an arm’s length away, so that the camera is at eye level.**
This does four things.
Firstly, it ensures your face is large on screen so the prospects can better see you. (Makes you trustworthy).
Second, it makes you seem taller, subtly giving you authority.
Third, it ensures your body is square to the camera, which subconsciously communicates that you are giving the prospect your full attention.
Lastly, by keeping your hands visible, you can use them as communication aids to underscore your points.
Good hand gestures will keep the prospects focused on your words.
Bad gestures or fidgeting will sadly distract from your message…
“omg he always cracks his knuckles / why does she keep straightening her shirt? / bruh stop clicking that pen“
You may have noticed I only put negative thoughts, not positive reactions.
It’s to highlight that when you have good body language, the prospect automatically likes you more without even realizing it.
The negative thoughts, however, will take their minds off your message and lower your status. Thankfully this is in your control. You can practice good posture and body language on any Zoom call, or in person.
As you start thinking about these things, you will notice bad (or great!) body language all around you. You can stand out, without saying a word yet. (The hard part)
